The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration has won the 2020 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for creating the first image of a supermassive black hole, taken by means of an Earth-sized alliance of telescopes. The team included many current and former Illinois faculty, staff, and students, with simulations led by Astronomy and Physics Professor Charles Gammie.

Congratulations to Charles, George Wong (Physics grad student), Ben Prather (Physics grad student), Andrew Nadolski (Astronomy grad student), Ben Ryan (former Astronomy grad student, now at LANL), Monika Moscibrodzka (former Physics postdoc, now at Radboud), Roman Gold (former Physics postdoc, now at Frankfurt), Hotaka Shiokawa (former Astronomy grad student, now at Rakuten Labs), and Dimitrios Psaltis (former Astronomy grad student, now at Arizona). They will all share in the prize money.
